Traditional martial arts for the modern world

We are Canberra's premier full-time karate school dedicated to the practice and preservation of traditional Okinawan Karate-do and Kobudo and have been operating as a non-profit organisation since 2009. We encourage you to learn more about us and get started on your karate journey.

Our dojo in Mitchell (Gungahlin area) has classes for children/families and teens/adults and caters for both complete beginners and those with experience. We teach traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu) Karate-do and Kobudo as founded by Osensei Shoshin Nagamine, Hanshi 10th Dan, and continue under the direct guidance of the World Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do Association in Okinawa, Japan.

The Cummings Karate Dojo is also a member of the Australian Karate Federation (NSW Branch), the only national governing body of karate in Australia recognised and endorsed by the federal government and the Australian Sports Commission. The AKF is a member of the World Karate Federation.

All classes are taught by internationally qualified instructors who have trained in the birthplace of Karate, Okinawa, and are dedicated to providing the highest level of quality instruction. While karate is an extremely practical and effective form of self-defence, we aim to teach traditional martial arts for the modern world through building the:

  1. Mind: through mental robustness, confidence / character development and discipline
  2. Body: through physical conditioning, reflex / co-ordination development and practical self-defence skills
