Instructor Development Program/FundThe dojo offers, where finances permit, its brown belts the ability to complete a First Aid/CPR course with an external provider, and have a certain percentage of it paid for. The Dojo invests significantly in the development of its instructors to ensure that its Member Promises of Quality Instruction and Quality Experiences are exceeded. There are multiple levels of instructor accreditation. All instructors and staff, regardless of volunteer or employees, will possess a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration. All instructors work through and are assessed using our internal Instructor Development Framework. This framework outlines the specific qualifications, certifications, courses, and assessment criteria of each level. Assistant Instructors and Instructors at the Cummings Karate Dojo also work within the AFTK's Instructor Certification Program. As a part of the Instructor Development Fund, instructors receive: • 100% funding of HLTAID001/002/003 • 100% funding of AFTK CPTKI (Assistant Instructors and above only) • Access to annual funding ($500pa) to assist with their training and development. Additional funding is available outside of these amounts should the finances be available • 50% off the Dojo Shop items • Instructors who form part of the Instructor Team receive a discount of $20 per month on their monthly fees. • When actively teaching, Instructors at Level 2/3/4 receive a discount on their monthly fees equivalent to one individual membership when they are active in the role and assisting at least once per week across the Juniors and/or Seniors Programs. • Instructors (Level 3-4) responsible for their own program will be provided with the training, support, and funding required to adequately perform their role, pending finances. • Instructors who form part of the Instructor Team and act as either Class 2iC or Lead Class Instructors, and are required as a part of meeting our ratio and safety requirements may also be remunerated as an employee. Instructor Levels For a detailed description of each level, see the Instructor Development Framework. • Level 0a - Junior Leader • Level 0b - Informal Assistant • Level 1 - Teaching Assistant (Shidohojoin 指導補助員) • Level 2 - Assistant Instructor (Fuku-shidoin 副指導員) • Level 3 - Instructor (Shidoin 指導員) • Level 4 - Head Instructor (Kancho 館長) Soto Deshi Program (Intensive Student Program)“Soto Deshi” is the Japanese term used for “outside student”. It refers to a student that lives outside of the dojo and still goes about their regular life, but also seeks greater focus and intensity in their training, and one that wants to immerse themselves in the art of karatedo or kobudo. A Soto Deshi Program can most commonly be likened to an apprenticeship. This is in comparison to an “uchi deshi” who also lives inside the dojo (the Cummings Karate Dojo does not offer an Uchi Deshi Program at this time).
The Soto Deshi Program is designed for students who are serious about their karate training, and want to dedicate more time to their practise over an extended period of time, in order to immerse themselves in the training. Training, other than family and work, are considered to be the top priority of a Soto Deshi.
The program is usually delivered over a 6 month training period, and is limited to maximum of 2 students at any one time. If you have any questions about the Soto Deshi Program, please contact us. All applications are welcome, but not all applications will be accepted.
Benefits of the Soto Deshi Program • You will be able to dramatically increase your karate or kobudo ability over a short period, and will [should] develop at a more rapid rate than other students due to the intensity of training • You will have access to four adults classes per week, including the class usually reserved for brown/black belts• You will have an individually tailored private tuition program delivered by the Head Instructor• All grading and seminar fees are included in the Soto Deshi Program• Possibility to obtain instructor certification• First Aid & CPR Certificate at no cost (must complete external course)• You will be immersed in the dojo community and culture, and subsequently have much added value to your training
Requirements of the Soto Deshi Program• Continued commitment to effort throughout an intensive/accelerated learning program that is both physically and mentally demanding – students must commit both physically and financially to the period of training• Assist with maintenance and events, including cleaning of the dojo (sweeping, tidying, washing up etc) after each class, and preparing for the next class, and to offer assistance for dojo maintenance when needed or requested• Minimum grade of Hachikyu (8th Kyu) and no higher than Nikyu (2nd Kyu). • Attendance at all major dojo events, including (but not limited to): Annual Gasshuku, Chief Instructor’s Seminar, Joint Dojo Training, Junior Gradings, any WMKA/IRKRS seminars, and social events• Commitment to training four days per week (Monday through Thursday / may differ for kobudo students) in formal classes, supplemented by their own individual training and private lessons with the Head Instructor (Soto Deshi may miss no more than 2 classes per month without good [medical, etc] reason). If classes are missed as per the above, the Soto Deshi forfeits their access to the Soto Deshi program, but is required to continue to pay the fee unless waived by the Head Instructor• Assist with instructing at one kids class a week (if possible – subject to ability and grade level, etc)• There is a 2 month probation period where the Soto Deshi candidate or Head Instructor may withdraw from the program for any reason with no financial commitment or obligation• Keep a training journal of skills learnt during the Soto Deshi Program
Outcomes of the Soto Deshi Program • The Soto Deshi is expected to progress through the grades, if all directions in the program are followed, at an accelerated rate, but will also be subject to more intensive grading requirements, however, the focus of the program should not be on grading • Development of a greater sense of community and belonging to the dojo • A Certificate of Achivement for completing the Soto Deshi Program• A more diverse understanding of the Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do and Kobudo curriculum• Possibility of a instructor accreditation
Okinawa Experience Scholarship ProgramEvery two years, where finances permit, the dojo opens applications to its existing student base to apply for one of two scholarships to fund a significant financial portion of their trip to Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate, to train with Okinawan Karate masters. Scholarships are generally offered in even-numbered years (ie 2016, 2018, 2020). Student Assistance Scholarship Program As a non-profit organisation, we believe that it is important to provide access to karatedo and kobudo to any student who is genuinely interested in pursuing the art(s) with dedication and passion. As such, CMAHD Inc is able to offer scholarships to students who require financial assistance. These scholarships are individually reviewed by the CMAHD Inc Committee and are applied for on an as-needed basis via the Chairman of the CMAHD Inc.
Student Development Program/FundThe dojo offers, where finances permit, financial support to members to attend competitions, seminars, workshops, and martial arts professional development opportunities. High Performance Athlete Program This includes offering funding to members who qualify for state or national-level competitions; for those who qualify for state-level competition rounds, the dojo will offer a 50% refund on entrance fees, and for national-level competition a 100% refund on entrance fees in recognition of their hardwork and representation of the Dojo. Any student competing at the state or national-level can also claim one free Dojo jacket.
